Prom Dress

So here in our little valley, Prom is a HUGE event. The Junior's all spend a ton of time finding the perfect dress & shoes and getting their hair & nails done.  Well, at least the girls.  Actually, the boys play along quite well and seem to enjoy it too.

The Junior's get out of class several times in the weeks before prom to practice the promenade.  A committee arranges kids in order of height and each student is pared with a partner.  At the prom, the couple comes out, is introduced and then sits down.  After all the Junior's {including the royalty} are introduced, the students stand up and dance a promenade.

It really is a sight to behold and many who don't live near us can't believe we really still do it.  Not only ONE night, but TWO!

I have a daughter who is a Junior this year and, of course, couldn't stand the thought of spending HUNDREDS of dollars on a dress--so off to Joann Fabrics we went and came up with an awesome dress, shoes, nails, and date for about $150--awesome, right?

I just about forgot the BEST part . . . after you dance with your partner, you get to dance with your parent and have a father/daughter or mother/son moment.  Very awesome . . .

Making a PROM dress is NOT as bad as everyone assumes it is -- The most important part is finding a pattern for the top that you like.  It doesn't have to be a dress pattern, it can be a blouse or jacket--whatever works for you.  Then, you want your fabric to be 'showy'.  This is not the time to pick the cotton floral that you love.  You just make the top according to the pattern and the bottom, you make big, triangle {but the top is flat} shapes and sew them together--add a hoop skirt & you're set!
Happy sewing and REMEMBER . . .
